Who am I ?
I am Octavia van Horik, an embroidery and textile artist based in Schiedam, with an atelier in Vlaardingen, the Netherlands. Working primarily with embroidery, beadwork, and mixed media, I create tactile works that explore themes of memory, color, attachment, and transformation.
Originally trained as a graphic designer, I discovered embroidery as a slower and more intuitive way of making. What began as a personal and therapeutic practice gradually evolved into my artistic language. Through repetition, texture, and vibrant color, I investigate the emotional weight carried by objects and the stories embedded in materials.
Situated at the intersection of art and craft, my practice reflects an interest in how handmade processes preserve traces of time, care, and human connection. Each work is built stitch by stitch, embracing slowness and imperfection while inviting a more attentive and contemplative way of looking.
Alongside my artistic practice, I share my passion for textiles through workshops and educational projects for children and adults, encouraging others to discover the joy, creativity, and meditative qualities of making by hand.
